On or about September 11, General David Patraeus will deliver his long awaited Iraq report. While for many this is just another step in policy making, for thousands of Iraqi Christians it is a matter of life and death.

Our prayer delegation recently flew to Baghdad and met with the Prime Minister of Iraq as well as with Iraqi Christian leaders. There we received a very disturbing assessment: Iraqi Christians face slaughter and possible annihilation if U.S. troops withdraw prematurely.

This potential human disaster demands immediate attention and action from our nation’s leaders to prevent a massacre. Please read our petition and add your signature using the form below. PETITION TO PREVENT THE SLAUGHTER OF CHRISTIANS IN IRAQ

At great personal risk to their own lives, a group of concerned clergy flew to Baghdad specifically to pray with top Iraqi officials, including Prime Minister Nuri al Maliki, and to meet with Iraqi Christian leaders.

When the visiting ministers met with the Iraqi Christian leaders, they asked what would happen to Christians in Iraq if the U.S. troops withdrew immediately. The response was as quick as it was chilling, “If U.S. troops withdraw, Christians in Iraq will be exterminated.”

After hearing this ominous report, I believe that, should U.S. troops withdraw prematurely from Iraq, and jihadists gain control, the result may be a religious bloodbath, with the mutilated bodies of Christians and other religious minorities littering the streets of Baghdad.

Although the leaders of the Iraqi government gave strong assurances of their intent to protect the rights of religious minorities, that commitment is as tenuous as the Iraqi government itself.

We must NOT let insurgents, terrorists, and radical extremists win.

We must NOT stand idly by while the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent people of faith hang in the balance.

This is not a political issue. It is not a conflict between Republicans or Democrats. This is a potential humanitarian crisis of unprecedented proportion affecting every person of conscience, regardless of political persuasion or affiliation.

Therefore, I respectfully demand that, as our nation’s leaders, you take every measure to prevent this potential extermination of Iraqi Christians and other religious minorities.
